ABOUT
Born in France, Catalan-Senegalese artist Awa is an emerging multidisciplinary artist based in Tiohtiá:ke (Montreal), working at the intersection of visual art and cinema through a research-creation approach. They hold a Bachelor’s degree (2018) and a Master’s degree (2022) in Communication and Political Science from the Université de Montréal.
In 2020, they contributed to the Black Lives Matter mural La Vie des Noir.e.s Compte in Montreal and worked as a political staffer for the Rosemont constituency at the Quebec National Assembly. The following year, they were selected as artist-in-residence for Moebius magazine. In 2022, they received the ALLIANCE residency from the MAI (Montréal Arts Interculturels) and from 2022 to 2023 co-managed the feminist queer bookstore and cooperative L’Euguélionne. After an initial career in the political and community sectors, Awa turned fully to visual art.
Their work has been presented in local and international contexts, including the Bushwick Gallery in Melbourne (AUS), Le Livart (CAN), and the House of Montréal Art Council. In 2025, they completed their first international residency at the Dikan Center in Accra (GHN) in partnership with Nigra Iuventa (CAN), culminating in an exhibition scheduled for late 2026. In 2026, they will pursue a collaborative research-creation project with the J.H. Nketia Archives, leading to an exhibition at Nuku Studio in Tamale in Spring 2026.

Né·e en France, l’artiste catalano-sénégalaise Awa est un·e artiste multidisciplinaire émergent·e basé·e à Tiohtiá:ke (Montréal), dont la pratique se situe à l’intersection des arts visuels et du cinéma, dans une approche de recherche-création. Iel est titulaire d’un baccalauréat (2018) et d’une maîtrise (2022) en communication et sciences politiques de l’Université de Montréal.
